SUMMER
Day 1:
Thursday, May 26th: 1pm - 5pm (4 hrs)
Today was my first day on the job as an intern
at The Center for Public Television. After being shown around the office and
meeting a handful of my new coworkers, we went out and shot some scenes for an
infomercial for Bama Dining. My boss asked if I would be interested in acting
in a scene sometime next week, and I agreed. Something to look forward to.
Great first day.
Day 2:
Friday, May 27th: 1pm - 7pm (6
hrs)
My coworkers went out and shot some more scenes
for the Bama Dining video earlier, but once I had arrived, they were editing
the footage. So, I learned more about the organization workflow that they have
at CPT, and then started to edit some of the pre-shot footage. I've been told
that my acting part will be of a French food critic, so I plan on going out to
the thrift store or something after work to shop and try to find some proper
clothing for my part.
Driver safety course – (4 hrs)
Day 3:
Monday, May 30th: 1pm - 6pm (5hrs)
Today, we continued to work on editing the
footage that we had already shot for the Bama Dining video. We elaborated
deeper into the post-production workflow so that I got a better understanding
of how to bring data into the systems.
Day 4:
Tuesday, May 31st: 1pm - 5pm (4 hrs)
Today, we continued to edit the Bama Dining
video. I learned a great deal of banner design and other digital production
tricks in premiere Pro.
Day 5:
Wednesday, June 1st: 1pm - 6pm (5
hrs)
Today we went and shot a promo video for the
law firm Cross and Smith. It was a great learning experience, both with dealing
with clientele professionally and from a technical standpoint behind the
camera. Easy to shoot, very straightforward.
Day 6:
Thursday, June 2nd: 12pm - 6pm (6
hrs)
Today Shawn, Michael and I stayed back in the
Digital Media Center and continued to flesh out the script for the remainder of
the Bama Dining promo. It's fun. After writing, we continued to edit what
footage we had already shot.
Day 7:
Friday, June 3rd: 10am - 6pm (8 hrs)
Today I finally got to act in the Bama Dining
promotional video. I played the role of a French food critic who praised the
delicious foods that are offered on campus. It was the most fun I've had on the
job.
Day 8:
Monday, June 6th: 11am - 6pm (7hrs)
Today we went to shoot some more promotional
video for United Way. We went to their headquarters in Tuscaloosa, near the
park with the old destroyed building (something to do with the civil war, I
can't remember the name). Very straightforward and easy shoot. The video looked
great. And we met a hobo in the park. He was nice.
Day 9:
Tuesday, June 7th: 1pm - 7pm (6 hrs)
Today we stayed back in the DMC and edited all
the United Way footage into a sequence. It's tedious, but I always enjoy
editing as it makes me a stronger and faster editor.
Day 10:
Wednesday, June 8th: 12pm - 5pm (5
hrs)
We went and shot for the Parking Services
promotional video today. It was lots of fun as always, but jeez it gets really
hot out there. Like really hot.
Day 11:
Thursday, June 9th: 12pm - 5pm (5hrs)
Continued to shoot the remainder of the Parking
Services video. It was also hot today. Bringing water bottle tomorrow.
Day 12:
Friday, June 10th: 12pm - 6pm (6
hrs)
Today we went and shot a promotional video for
the new Robert Witt housing facilities. We had to be very professional because
apparently he's a big dawg. We also got to fly a drone, my first experience
with it. It was a little windy so I didn't fly it too much because I ain't got
no money for dat.
Day 13:
Monday, June 13th: 12pm - 5pm (5
hrs)
We continued to shoot for the Robert E Witt
promotional video for the new complex on campus. More drone flying. Fun stuff.
Continued to shoot more for the new housing complex.
Day 14:
Tuesday, June 14th: 12pm - 6pm (6
hrs)
We went out and shot the video for parking
services today, it was mega über hot. Elizabeth played a robot while Malcolm
was the regular dude who rides a bus and talks a lot. It was fun but very
hot.
Day 15:
Wednesday, June 15th: 11am - 6pm (7
hrs)
Today we shot in the studio in the Digital
media Center. I was originally cast to play the part of Steve Jobs, but
chickened out at the last minute. I'm just too fat to pull off a jobs. My boss,
Gray stepped in and pulled it off. It was cool being able to shoot on a green screen
in that nice studio.
Day 16:
Thursday, June 16th: 12pm - 7pm (7
hrs)
Sequenced together the parking services video
that we had shot earlier this week. Continued to learn more about banners and
graphics. I really need to be fluent in Creative Cloud.
Day 17:
Friday, June 17th: 12pm - 6pm (6
hrs)
Today we had to go and reshoot a scene that
people didn't care for in the original Bama dining video. Hopefully this
actress is better understood than the last.
Day 18:
Monday, June 20th: 12pm - 5pm (5 hrs)
Today I did the voice acting in the upcoming
Bike at Bama promotional video, and after we had recorded the script that our
boss helped write with us, we edited my vocals down to match the script
perfectly, taking the best vocal takes and editing it down into about a minute
and twenty seconds. The thing about working for a TV station is if you expect
any of your stuff to actually air, it needs to be about a minute to a minute
thirty. Anything over that is a little too expensive.
Day 19:
Tuesday, June 21st: 12pm - 5pm (5
hrs)
Today we planned out our shoot for the
"Bike At Bama" shoot later this week. We also went and picked up the
bikes that we'll be using from the parking garage near Presidential
Village. Planning included storyboarding, writing, and finding actors.
Day 20:
Wednesday, June 22nd: 10am - 7pm (9
hrs)
Today, Ali, Shawn and I went around campus on
bikes, scouting for the best locations to shoot our footage for the “Bike at
Bama” promotional video. It has been a while since I’ve ridden a bike, and it
was like 93 degrees. Mistake wearing that thick ass baseball jersey.
Day 21:
Thursday, June 23rd: 10am - 8pm (10
hrs)
Due to some continuity errors and overall not a
great look on our previous bike shoot, we had to go and shoot again, It was
also hot. And guess what. I had to wear the same damn shirt again for
continuity’s sake. Yaaaaay. It was fun though.
Day 22:
Friday, June 24th: 10am - 5pm (7
hrs)
Today, Shawn and I brought in all the footage
from the bike shoots and we started to sequence it up in Premiere. We got a
rough cut done in about three hours. then continued to edit our promo vid for
Crimson Ride.
Day 23:
Monday, June 27th: 10am - 5pm (7
hrs)
Shawn and I continued to edit the Crimson Ride
video today, and then took a break by editing more thoroughly the biking video.
Very edit-y day. I ain’t mad at it.
Day 24: Tuesday, June 28th: 10am - 6pm
(8 hrs)
Today, we had to reshoot yet again more footage
from the biking video. Shawn and I drove around campus and surrounding areas
looking for the best possible areas to achieve the most aesthetically pleasing
shots, and then I got to dress up again as a bike thief.
Day 25:
Wednesday, June 29th: 10am - 8pm (10
hrs)
Today we were mostly inside editing the biker
video together. We did that until 5pm, when we went outside and helped Don from
WVUA shoot a promo video for the WVUA anchors. It was all B-roll, and we don’t
have access to the footage because it’s all Don’s now.
Day 26:
Thursday, June 30th: 10am - 7pm (9
hrs)
Today, Shawn and I took the van around campus
and scouted for the best possible areas to shoot for the parking services
video, as well as reshooting some stuff for the “bad biker” character in the
Bike at Bama video.
Day 27:
Friday, July 1st: 10am - 5pm (7 hrs)
Edit Crimson Ride down to a faster pace. Export
it. Reshoot for Biking video.
Day 28:
Wednesday, July 13th: 10am - 5pm (7
hrs)
Today we got together and talked about ideas
for upcoming projects. We have 3 different shoots in the coming weeks and we
discussed possibilities for producing the highest-quality media, and then I
edited some footage. I also planned out some ideas for my Detour video that all
interns usually do.
Day 29:
Thursday, July 14th: 10am - 6pm (8
hrs)
Today we stayed back in the Digital Media
Center to brainstorm ideas for the upcoming shoots. Planning new shoots for the
Riverwalk, Theatre Tuscaloosa, and Band of Brothers Brewing Company.
Day 30:
Friday, July 15th: 10am - 5pm (7
hrs)
Storyboarded and scripted Riverwalk, Theatre
Tuscaloosa. We rode around after some writing and pre-production to Riverwalk
to get a better understanding of what exactly we wanted to shoot, taking photos
along the way and playing Pokemon Go. Lots of Magikarps out, and I even got a
Dratini.
Day 31:
Monday, July 18th: 10am - 5pm (7
hrs)
Scout, storyboard, and script Band of Brothers
Brewing Co. We rode to Band of Brothers Brewing Company today, whnich is a
super cool spot. IF I had the money to waste at a bar, I’d probably do it
there. It’s completely unadvertised and exists in a big warehouse. A totally
hidden gem. Also learned a lot about the brewing process. Cool stuff.
Day 32:
Tuesday, July 19th: 10am - 5pm (7
hrs)
Storyboarded shoot for tomorrow at Shelton
State, planned shots for Band of Brothers detour. We got a better understanding
of what we’re working with for the shoot at Shelton State tomorrow. We’re going
to the theatre on campus to film a “One and Only” promo video for Tuscaloosa
tourism ads. Gray told me they’ll even play as local YouTube ads. That’s pretty
neat.
Day 33:
Wednesday, July 20th: 10am - 7pm (9
hrs)
Today we went on the shoot at Shelton State.
Couldn’t have gone much smoother than it did. And the play was actually very
enjoyable, as I suspected.
Day 34:
Thursday, July 21st: 10am - 6pm (8
hrs)
Today we were mostly in the Digital Media
Center, working on the stuff we shot yesterday. Because these “One and Only”
promos are only fifteen seconds, we got it all sequenced up in about an hour.
Looks pretty good too. After lunch, Gray took us out to the Arboretum to fly
the drone as a method of practice. He’s got one kick-ass drone too. Very fun
day.
